Market Overview
Within Peninsular Malaysia alone, approximately 25,000 tonnes of waste is generated per day and it is estimated to increase to more than 30,000 tonnes daily by the year 2020 (refer Figure 1).
Traditionally, more than 90% of the total waste received is disposed into landfills as this has been the most economical waste disposal option. With increasing economic growth, purchasing power and population size as well as improved standards of living has resulted in higher waste generation in Malaysia. Former Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail recently highlighted that on average, a Malaysian dispose approximately 1kg of food waste per day. This increasing waste generation is now outstretching the available waste facilities limits and lifespans.
